[Confession] Strong Woman Do Bong Soon
Before anything else, I would like to define my drama reviewing:
First, I won't be posting episode recaps for dramas because i don't trust my character - I tend to get lazy when I have routines to accomplish and
Second, sometimes when I decide to watch a drama, I depend my continuance on the first episode. So if ever I am interested in a drama, I will watch the first episode and I will review it just to see how it goes. If I liked it, I'll have a continuation review after I finished the whole thing.
Kke, let's go! :D
*minor spoiler alert*
It’s a long weekend for us during Holy Week, which means I had all the time finishing Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, which I was horribly behind than I already was! Everybody was watching it and having a great time while I try not to be tempted and wait for the whole series to finish first. But of course, that doesn’t mean I haven’t watched anything at all, since that would be crazy talk lol Here's my take on SWDBS's Episode one before you proceed with caution lol
Here is the synopsis of the drama:
Do Bong Soon is a young woman born with superhuman strength, who breaks everything she touches if she's not careful. However, she desperately wants to become a willowy and elegant woman, which is the ideal type of her crush In Guk Doo . Thanks to her strength, she gets the job of a bodyguard, to a spoiled rich heir An Min Hyuk, the boss of a gaming company. Opposite of Guk Doo, Min-hyuk is a crazy and odd man who is imperious and has no regard for rules.
One day, Bong-soon, Guk-doo and Min Hyuk gets caught up in a serial murder case that breaks in their neighborhood, and end up reluctantly living together for security purposes. A series of misunderstanding occur when Guk-doo mistakens Min Hyuk's affection.
I've been squeeing for days. I love this couple, and up to its last episodes, it was still like a burst of candy in the veins. It meanders on tangents and ridiculous side stories from time to time, but once I see Bong-bong and Min-min together on screen, I forgive the show for everything. I really have minimal complaints, though, since the show is a fun breezy watch that makes sure that the creepy and scary bits never outweigh the cute. Park Bo-young and Park Hyung-sik were totally killing their roles and I love the way he looks at her, like he’s just so utterly in love with her that he can’t stop staring. Feels like it's real gaaaa
I love that Strong Woman Do Bong Soon makes it absolutely clear that Bong-soon is the superhero of the story and the boys are like her sidekicks. But there were times I'm piss at the boys because they underestimate Bong-soon (well Gook-du doesn't know the powers). I dislike it when guys control women and thinks they're protecting them with that. I sound feministic here but it's 2017 and girls are kickin' already haha. It may be on the nose to have a strong woman take down a Giant Im Si-wan but I love it—it’s simple, empowering, and goddamn satisfying.
At some point I was bothered: Like that scene where Bong-soon was trapped with a bomb strapped to her chest, and Min-hyuk was coming to save her. Thankfully the entire cliche of prince-rescues-princess was averted because he wasn’t actually able to break through a solid steel door, BUT then she was saved via deus ex machina instead, which is almost equally as disappointing in my book. It was corny for me to gain her powers that way just because it suits the plot.
Ultimately this show is a romance, and, sure, the relationship between the two leads was super swoon-worthy and all kinds of adorable, but it was also built on how much they respected each other as individuals, and how willingly they were to express how much the other meant to them. It’s about being equals, you know.
Besides, Min-hyuk is awesome. As we approach the end, I think back to my earliest impressions of the character, and how I couldn’t wrap my mind around how weird and contradictory he was behaving. I realize now that I was struggling because I couldn’t immediately classify him with other characters I’d seen before, and it’s mainly because he kept blossoming and impressing me as his love for Bong-soon clarified. At some point, I was seeing some of Actor Ji-Sung's acting points in Hyung-Sik, and if Hyung Sik keeps surprising people like this, as well as getting the right projects for him, he has this potential to be a Class-A actor like Ji-Sung in the future.
I’m terribly sad to see Strong Woman Do Bong Soon end, but I’m thankful we get to see a show as lovable as this. And to end this on a higher note, I will say this — Kim Won-hae is really the man here!!
