[Confession] Sierra Burgees is a Loser

Here is the synopsis of the movie:

SIERRA BURGESS IS A LOSER is a modern rom-com retelling of the Cyrano de Bergerac story set in high school. The story centers on Sierra (Shannon Purser), an intelligent teen who does not fall into the shallow definition of high school pretty but, in a case of mistaken identity that results in unexpected romance, must team with the popular girl (Kristine Froseth) in order to win her crush.

Okay, so this came in from my Netflix notif as their newest offering. And it got quite a hype because Noah Centineo of To All the Boys I've Loved Before is apparently also part of the film as the main guy. So since I liked Noah before and I was also a 'Barb sympathizer', I told myself - "why not?"

The central idea of Sierra Burgess is that awkward teen girls who are larger than a size two are worthy of love, and in that sense, that was a good intention to bring about because a lot of teen girls who are not exactly model-body type have low self-esteem in life. (but I don't generalize it, cause I don't have low self-esteem lol)

But this movie fails in so many levels. While this movie may take on the sweetness and fluff of teen romance and the push of the cute mistaken identify shizz, it doesn't make up for the fact that IT'S NOT THAT EASY TO GET ROMANCE, ESPECIALLY NOT IN THAT KIND OF WAY. The story is clumsy and doesn't deepen the character developments, the ending feels wonky and unrealistic and the whole thing feels unfinished like it didn't get past the first draft. The casts are great, sure, but the movie loses itself when it turns away from its more unconventional and grounded elements and leans into the unnecessary '80s feels of 'let's wrap it up and have a good ending anyway'.

Maybe the good thing here is the found friendship of Sierra and Veronica despite their social status quo. And also the practice of self-confidence here and there. And Noah, of course. Noah. Haha!

This is a nice film on the shallow surface, but this is the kind of movie I wouldn't let my future daughter see.
