[Confession] The Best Hit Episode 1

Before anything else, I would like to define my drama reviewing:

First, I won't be posting episode recaps for dramas because i don't trust my character - I tend to get lazy when I have routines to accomplish and

Second, sometimes when I decide to watch a drama, I depend my continuance on the first episode. So if ever I am interested in a drama, I will watch the first episode and I will review it just to see how it goes. If I liked it, I'll have a continuation review after I finished the whole thing.

Kke, let's go! :D

*major spoiler alert*

This weekend, I started something crazy. Since I was way behind k-dramas and they kept popping like pimples, I begun a K-drama First Episode Hunt - I watch(ed) First Episodes of every new kdrama I like and will do reviews later on. This will determine which series I will be sticking till the end and as you can see, I already picked my very first show to review - The Best Hit.

Here is the synopsis of the drama:

Yoo Hyun-Jae (Yoon Si-Yoon) is a member of a popular idol group. He has a lot of fans and he is a scandal maker. Meanwhile, Lee Ji-Hoon (Kim Min-Jae) is an aspiring singer. He pretends to be studying for his civil servant exam, but he is actually struggling to become an idol.

I've been eyeing this drama for awhile because The Best Hit was promoted as a hybrid-variety drama which follows the footsteps of the first variety-drama The Producers. I liked the idea, because that structure was new and refreshing. And another thing that kept my eyeballs stuck on this was the fact that Cha Tae Hyun (The Producers) collaborated with Yoo Ho-Jin (former Director, 2 Days & 1 Night) to direct this show - and those were my deciding factors. Now on with the Episode 1 (&2)

Truthfully, there’s nothing variety about it and it turned out to not be very hybrid in format at all, and instead just played out like a regular ol’ drama. I was a little disappointed that they didn’t do anything fresh with format (say, the mockumentary style that The Producers attempted at the start). It feels loosely plotted, like a sitcom, so I’m adjusting my expectations for something closer to High Kick in feel. The first episode felt a little scattered, like skit after skit, but towards the end we started seeing how the characters fit into the same world, and I liked that much better. Yoon Shi-yoon was barely in the premiere, but I have a feeling he’s going to be awesome.

I didn’t like how Ji-hoon just announced that Hyun-jae was his father, since even if that was the obvious setup that we were meant to guess, there was a lot of narrative suspense that could’ve been mined from it if they’d held on to the secret a little longer. I mean, longer than the first day might’ve been nice. And the outrageous setup of the time-traveling idol father and his idol trainee son meeting when they are the exact same age, and in such different positions in the same industry still doesn't stick to me. I mean this is suppose to be a variety-drama, why add fantasy?

Now maybe most of you noticed how short the Episode 1 was - it was intendedly cut in half. I saw a news about a month ago warning us not to be surprised because I believe the Chinese requested it to be shortened to cut something I don't remember. So yeah, don't be surprised if it's a cliffhanger, its other-half is in the next Episode (and yes, I actually watched Episode 1 & 2 here)

Overall my impression is positive, given that I like our main characters by the end of the first two episodes, and found a lot of the situations funny. I can feel the fresh vibe it's going to give but the scheme of trying to be new didn't quite fit - but whatevs, I'll still be sticking with it anyway.
