For a Valentine treat (a Post V-day for me!) movie, My Ex and Why's has the theme of 'Trusting' and 'Second Chance' which is so familiar to everyone that it's no surprise why Filipinos are easily attracted - Cathy Garcia-Molina knows the exact winning formula to tug the heartstrings of the people, making it relatable yet possibly exhausting.

Here is the synopsis of the movie:
It tells the story of Cali (Liza Soberano) a blogger who owns the blog, "The Bakit List", and her ex-boyfriend Gio (Enrique Gil). who will return to her life unexpectedly and surprisingly. Will love knock again for a second time? (cr. wiki)
Ahem, ahem. In all honesty - I was more attracted to the fact that LizQuen went to South Korea instead of the whole concept of the story. I had this big reaction (my sorrows) when they arrived at South Korea and not sympathize if Liza really was ugly and exchangeable. So the word 'South Korea' was a big distraction to me while I was watching the whole thing - nevertheless, that distraction won't affect any of my feelings here. Hehe
From Forevermore, I already loved LizQuen's undeniable chemistry. I'm not a fan but sometimes it's cute to see them on-screen. Even from their past movies, it wasn't forced and so was here. I have no whys on how they act and so on. But apart from the orchestrated approach of this film, what I appreciated the most about it was how it delved into a world that has rarely been covered but very relative: being social media famous. Having LizQuen both play bloggers introduces to its audience how much fabrication is done from a single post, and that most of what we see online are Games of Trolls. (see what I did there?)
If I were to compliment a character (which I am doing now) I have to give my cookies to Ryan Bang. He's a key role to reuniting LizQuen and he was serious despite his comedic stance. He's like Running Man's Lee Kwang Soo where he's a total comedian on variety shows but does his best in acting chops - many people actually think he was the scene-stealer of the movie. I hope I could see a more serious side of him in the future.
The 'negastar' of My Exs and Why's is the story, no doubt about that. I thought I was reading a wattpad story - and I have a strong contrast to wattpad stories. It doesn't delve deeper into possible scenes since the theme has a potential beyond what is presented. The characters created were also unrealistic and rather annoying - a family of cheaters and friends who push you to be unforgiving - the characterizations were bad. The story has a common premise of conquering love. So how many times can Pinoy movies tackle the same topic anyway?
Dapat ba may pinagdadaanan ka to appreciate the movie? Definitely not. But you can save a lot and just go on a date instead of watching a movie on gender stereotyping and internet bashers collide.
