[Confession] Because I Love You

Valentines Day is fast approaching and everyone around us seems to be sensitive (both good and bad) in anything related to love. On the other hand, maybe this is the perfect movie for you because it could very well restore your faith in love in all forms and/or give you the good cathartic cry you’ve been needing. And personally, I believe you must watch this.

Here is the synopsis of the movie:

This movie is about Lee Hyeong (Cha Tae-hyun) whose spirit, after an accident, started entering the bodies of people struggling with love, and Scully (Kim Yoo-jung), the high school student who guides his spirit along the way (cr. wiki)

Just like all Cha Tae Hyun movies, it will leave you both laughing and crying. The movie didn't feel forced unlike with many movies often because it revolves around with the characters and not the main actors per se. What I've found is simple human relationships and interactions that binds us through the title of the movie itself. Each characters had a different feeling to it even if its something you can't relate personally. Every emotional moment feels engineered to fill our hearts and take our tears, sure, but there’s no result or truth the movie comes to that feels disingenuous to its fully-realized world and characters. This may contain fantasy but the theme it delivers, in that sense, is a love story portrayed in many different ways. Pure and simple.

One of the things that was lacking was the depth of the characters. Maybe because there's too many characters involved with so little time, so we weren't given much background to it (especially the first one). Another thing is the ending. I was not convinced at how it ended. I'm not sure who really dies or who lives or what I'm seeing is just an apparition. It's not open ended yet it doesn't give you hints to ease the confusion as well. Last one is the consistency of the character's purpose to the movie. This may be a fan error or something, but I've read somewhere that Chan Young is Lee Hyeong's friend and is in love with Hyun Kyung (Lee Hyeong's girlfriend). But once he was possessed by Lee Hyeong nothing developed between them. Isn't Lee Hyeong purpose is to play cupid even if it's his bestfriend and girlfriend? The reason why he's in Chan Young's body in the first place is because that's his mission? It's a bother not to know and that results to consistency. Bummer.

Bottom line: Deeply moving and emotionally heartfelt, Because I Love You boasts fantastic performances from a quirky set of characters in circumstances that are perhaps most relatable and funny, but no less compelling. A rare gem that lives up to its noise that will truly make you laugh and cry before making you do it all over again backward and few times over.
