[Confession] Tomorrow With You Episode 1
Before anything else, I would like to define my drama reviewing:
First, I won't be posting episode recaps for dramas because i don't trust my character - I tend to get lazy when I have routines to accomplish and
Second, sometimes when I decide to watch a drama, I depend my continuance on the first episode. So if ever I am interested in a drama, I will watch the first episode and I will review it just to see how it goes. If I liked it, I'll have a continuation review after I finished the whole thing.
Kke, let's go! :D
After the ending of tvN's awesome heart-wrenching drama Goblin, the channel hinted high stakes for something new and launched their new show Tomorrow With You starring Lee Je Hoon (Signal) and Shin Mina (Oh My Venus), which glimpses a happy future with a stranger -- wait, a what?
Here is the synopsis of the drama:
The story will revolve around Yoo So-joon (Lee Je-hoon), a CEO of a real estate company, who has the ability to travel through time via a subway; and his wife, Song Ma-rin (Shin Min-a), who works as a photographer. So-joon foresees his future-self living miserably so he decides to marry Ma-rin in order to avoid that fate. As time passes, he learns to love her selflessly.
Upon reviewing this before its release, this drama was originally marketed as the love story between a handsome time-traveling investment firm CEO and a cheerful child star who grew up to be a photographer. So I thought it was going to be a sweet fantasy romance in the vein of Oh My Venus with lots of fluff and warm fuzzy feelings. However, they latest extended teaser shows a thrilling mystery which may have life-threatening consequences. Cool, not too fluffy!
Sooo when I watched the first episode, I was giddy because I'll be seeing more of Lee Je Hoon, not as a serious private-eye detective, but a swoony time traveller via subway (no, not the sandwich) who lands himself a wife in the future. It'd be my first time seeing him in a rom-com and I'm sooo ready for it. As for Shin Mina, who always wins the hearts of many because of everything and anything she does, is back as an unpredictable and spunky photographer! I'm ecstatic because the plot thickened when we learned about a death prophecy So joon witnessed which is his impending death with a girl he doesn't know yet. It looks like we’ll be in for a cute romance paired with high life-changing stakes, which I’m always down to watch. I just wonder how these two can makeshift people's emotions with the underlying reason why they're destined to meet in the first place? And how often does a drama use future as a weapon instead of the past, right? Savvy.
As part of tvN's refreshing production, I see similarities here and in Goblin on cinematography. It's almost like a movie - most of the time So joon's time travelling - except it does not deliver fantasy takes yet and it doesn't have picturesque locations. I am quite bothered to a filtered effect they applied on the first episode. It's something sepia-ish and it makes me sleepy no matter how I avoid. I hope they don't do it in the upcoming episodes and just apply them when needed. hmm
The first episode isn't as flashy or addicting as I thought it would be. It has the elements presented in its promotional teasers but it's still airy that I can't fully grasp it yet. The variables weren't laid flat yet, too. For example, it still doesn't arrive to how So joon come and go from the subway to time travel or who is Jo Han Chul's character. Because they got my interest in the last few minutes in the episode, I am curious. I am curious but I can wait.
Alrightt since it's the first episode, I'll be a forgiver and continue on to the second episode. From there, I'll decide if I'll look forward every Fri-Sat for new episodes or I'll just save myself the pain of expecting and just hoard until it's complete. Either way, Tomorrow With You is one of the top of my 'to-watch' list. Hurray!
