[Confession] The Lonely Shining Goblin Episode 1
Before anything else, I would like to define my drama reviewing:
First, I won't be posting episode recaps for dramas because i don't trust my character - I tend to get lazy when I have routines to accomplish and
Second, sometimes when I decide to watch a drama, I depend my continuance on the first episode. So if ever I am interested in a drama, I will watch the first episode and I will review it just to see how it goes. If I liked it, I'll have a continuation review after I finished the whole thing.
Kke, let's go! :D
Yaaay! So this is my first review on the first episode of tVN's new Fri & Sat drama: The Lonely Shining Goblin a.k.a Goblin and seeing the cast and trailer - I can't help but feel its rising hype! Will the first episode suffice the great expectation of its viewers? Let's find out!
Goblin is about a Dokkaebi (Gong Yoo) in need of a human bride to end his immortal life. Meanwhile, the Angel of Death (Lee Dong Wook) has amnesia. Somehow these two meet and live together. They see off those who have passed away and are now leaving this world.
The first episode spans on the past and present backstory jumps that creates what conditions Kim Shin did to be turned into a Goblin. It does not only feel epic but its fantasy side also brings you to think great lengths of possibilities in the story line. The episode also traverses the meetings of characters and their roles but not their purposes. It also reveals the two deities (Goblin & Death God) forcing them to live together under the same roof that before long may turn into an intersection of an impending storm.
The whole time I was watching Goblin, I thought I was watching a movie. Their cinematography, direction and effects are no joke! Its perfectly composed and well-executed shots were truly one of a kind. Mainly because its premiere is that kind of story and production value that takes you on a whole new dimension you never thought could see - it was an impressive start. The second maybe because it was like Reply 1988 - which is an hour and a half long. And I won't even complain! I may have whined some time in Reply for being too long for a drama but I won't complain this time and enjoy every minute of it since it doesn't feel that long when you're enjoying something.
The premise was strong and gives you a lot of hullabaloos on what tricks it hides on its sleeves. I know that reviewing Goblin's first episode may be too early to judge but I can sense tears down the line because it clearly stated in the synopsis that the Goblin's predicament to end his immortality has the need to look for his bride. Which means Death is his entire goal as a Goblin. But we can always hope for great twists, right? Kke.
The Goblin's premiere episode surpasses tVN's highest rating drama on a first episode: Reply 1988 at 6.7% while Goblin at 9.3%. So I may actually take that as a 'Yes, it passed our expectations!' to the drama hype - so hooray for fantasy romance and stop what you're doing and go watch Goblin right now! (I'm a bad influence, yes)
Another review to follow at the end of the series ;)
