[Confesssion] Three Color Fantasy Series: Queen of the Ring

*minor spoiler alert*

UGH.. What a late update for me. Good thing the third installment of the Three Color Fantasy Series had six (6) episodes like the other two and it wasn't that long. The Queen of the Ring episode, which stars the Splash Splash Love short drama stars Kim Seul Gi (Oh My Ghostess) and Ahn Hyo Seop (Entertainer), comes with a story of finding true beauty within -- wait, Beauty and the Beast?

Here is the synopsis of the drama:

Mo Nan-Hee (Kim Seul-Gi) is ugly and this has influenced her to become mean. One day, she receives a ring which holds a family secret. Park Se-Gun (Ahn Hyo-Seop) is handsome, but he has a cold-blooded personality. Due to the magic of the ring, he declares Nan-Hee as his ideal woman with a beautiful appearance. (cr. asianwiki)

It's a common theme that people should love based on personality and not because of the looks, right? Well, the Queen of the Ring rides with the Beauty and the Beast wave by presenting a story so familiar and possibly the single most eye-rolling cliché of them all? That even if they present the same theme over and over, people are already clouded with a kind of standard beauty shown on media. These implications may have been noted, yet they're still mostly ignored.

Plot-wise, the pacing was fun. It kept me going because it initially has Kim Seul Gi in it - and who wouldn't love this talented girl?! And no, she's not ugly!! -- Now going back, I like the twists of events. I like that the secret of the ring didn't drag the story to the end but was presented in the middle, giving the characters a chance to digest and resolve the issue.

Byun Tae Hyun (Lee Tae Sun) is the character I would like to polish and shine on its own. Aside from the fact that he's friendzoned, his guts and actions to tell the girl his feelings makes him manlier than any Park Se Gun's actions ever had been. Lee Tae Sun as an actor made so much impression in me from Entertainer that he's got me in his side in everything he do. I sympathize with him not because he looks like a puppy, but because I feel he's genuinely kind. And I like that kind of actor. *ehem*Park Bo Gum*ehem* I wish for more projects from him!

Maybe the minor setback of this drama was that it was tad predictable and Nan Hee's sense of crippling unwarranted insecurity. Yes, we all have insecurities but milking on them just badly affects us more than any others. It should be fair that since we have people who love us because we are us, it's best that we love ourselves first in spite of our imperfections. Although at the very least, the Queen of the Ring was good enough of an overall fairly sweet drama. It was moving, and I can definitely appreciate that the drama's heart is in the right place.
