[Confession] Three Color Fantasy Series: The Universe's Star
*minor spoiler alert*
It wasn't in my plan to squeeze in another drama since I've loaded my phone with dramas already - yet here I am reviewing another thing like I have lots of time in my hands. Haha! But good thing from this, Three Color Fantasy Series, which is Directed by Kim Ji Hyun (the Director of Splash Splash Love), is a three-color short drama series that has six (6) episodes with approx 30-minute duration each. Thus, this is a short drama and I will be reviewing its first part: 'The Universe's Star' - the White Series.
Here is the synopsis of the drama:
The Universe's Star is a love story between a gifted singer-songwriter Woo-joo (EXO's Suho) and Byul (Ji Woo), a 19-year-old student who becomes the Grim Reaper after dying in an accident.
Now back to what I was saying, I really enjoyed this drama. Not only was it short, it was also a drama full of life lessons. To be honest, I didn't expect anything from it - I was only browsing in general (because Moonlovers is getting tragic, I need space lol) then I encountered the second part of the series which stars Yoon Shi Yoon (♥). Learning that it was a short series, it lead me to this and I don't regret anythingg.
I've seen Suho act once in Exo Next Door but it was short that I didn't acknowledge his possible existence as an actor yet compared to D.O and Chanyeol whose been in many acting projects before. And finally seeing him, I admit he did move me most of the time. There were instances that I watch him in awe specifically when he's playing his piano.
The lead girl Ji Woo is an actress I've never seen before. I had second thoughts if she was a singer because she had singing parts in this drama however she's actually just an actress. Ugghh the versatility of actors and idols nowadayss!! Anyway, since I can't recall ever seeing her, I am unable to compare her acting to something else. But I feel that she did a great job doing the role. She also looked like Anne Hathaway in some angles, imo.
All that aside, I thought the plot was common. Telling stories of spirits departing through Grim Reapers' eyes felt all too familiar to me - good thing they proved me wrong. They elaborated the storytelling: the girl grim reaper, who used to be a fan-girl for a famous singer, is trying to keep her idol alive. During the process she interferes with life and death matters and is sent back to life with a number of wishes she can use in order to save the singer. Towards the end, I was a bit confused for a second because of the bargaining part of whose gonna live or not but in the end it was cleared out and answered all my questions. It was sad knowing that you have a time limit on earth but that makes you appreaciate everything around you - love, laugh and play all you want and create memories instead of worrying what's ahead. There was a time that they subtly found out she isn't human but they didn't react at all for example "The fxck I just kissed a ghost" or "Wtf she's not alive. How am I even gonna continue this relationship??" or "Has she seen me naked before?"yadah yadah. Okay the last part was a joke but kidding aside, They didn't react at all and it made me curious if it isn't their first time encountering a ghost. lol
I was happy, nonetheless. This drama acknowledges themes of love of family and friendship and also having no regrets and forgiving courageously. The cast are talented and moving and they deserve more exposure soon. The characters they played were connected in many ways and they stitched impending plot holes before it has gotten bigger and patched it prettily. That's why I am looking forward to the second and third drama of this series. It satisfies my drama cravings but in a short, intimate while and that's all I ask for.
PS. I tell you, the lead girl is the luckiest fangirl ever!
